What is breast reduction?
Breast reduction is often a reconstructive procedure during which the breasts are made smaller, lighter, and more proportionate to the size and shape of the woman’s body. The procedure is usually done to alleviate physical discomforts as a result of the patient's overly large breasts. In this case, the procedure may be covered by your insurance.
What does breast reduction do?
During a breast reduction procedure, the surgeon will remove excess breast tissue, reposition the nipple to a higher, more natural position, and reshape and tighten the skin. The procedure results in smaller, perkier breasts. Any preoperative pain is often immediately eliminated by a breast reduction. Some women may be candidates for breast reduction using liposuction. While this reduces the breast size, it usually will not result in making them perkier. This is more frequently reserved for younger women with large, but not droopy breasts.
How long does recovery take?
Five to seven days after surgery, most patients are able to return to light activity. Within four to six weeks, most patients are able to resume most normal activities.
